Dr. Monica Barfield is a dual board-certified, doctoral-prepared nurse practitioner and the founder of New Horizon Primary Care in Port St. Joe, Florida, the state’s first fully autonomous NP-led primary care practice. Since opening in 2020 under HB 607, she has pioneered accessible, high-quality care for rural and underserved communities, providing full-spectrum services with a holistic, root-cause approach.

A nationally recognized advocate and recipient of the 2025 Florida Nurses Association Barbara Lumpkin Award and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Awardee of Excellence for Florida, Dr. Barfield has delivered expert testimony before the Florida Legislature and authored multiple op-eds in Florida Politics and the Tallahassee Democrat advancing full practice authority and mental-health access. She serves as Region 1 Director and Chair of Autonomous Practice for the Florida Nurse Practitioner Network and as Secretary of the Florida Coalition for Advanced Practice Nurses.

Dr. Barfield is an expert speaker, leading statewide workshops and webinars, including “Roadmap to Opening an Autonomous NP Primary Care Practice,” recently released as an accredited CE course through Colibri Group and Elite NP. Her practice has been named Best of Florida in the Physician category (2023 to 2025), and she was featured in the AANP “We Choose NPs” national campaign highlighting NP-led rural care.
