Labor pain, which is considered one of the most intense types of pain that a person may experience in life, has been extensively researched. While epidural analgesia is the most effective way of managing pain during labor, patient preferences, contraindications, limited availability, and technical failure may necessitate the use of alternative pain relief approaches. These may include systemic pharmacological agents and non-pharmacological methods. In this review, the authors aim to present the available data (mainly based on recent level I evidence on pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic methods) on the effectiveness of pain relief approaches for labor aside from epidural analgesia.
