As researchers describe demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who are managed in primary care, they saw the demand for a greater amount of real-life effectiveness trials to support decision-making at the primary care level.

The study used data from the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Optimum Patient Care DARTNet Research Database, where the Advancing the Patient Experience COPD registry is derived from. Electronic health record data was used from primary care groups in Texas, Ohio, Colorado, New York, and North Carolina from June 2019 to November 2020. Approximately 17,000 patients were included in the study, with the majority being female (56%), White (64%), current or former smokers (80%), and overweight or obese (69%). The most frequently used maintenance therapies were inhaled corticosteroids with a long-acting β2-agonist and inhaled corticosteroid with a long-acting muscarinic antagonist.
