Those who injure their leg below the knee and those undergoing knee arthroscopy are at increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism. Researchers looked at how lower-leg injuries and knee arthroscopies shift plasma levels of anticoagulants as well as fibrinolytic factors; they used a before-and-after study for knee arthroscopies and a cross-sectional study for lower-leg traumas. Knee arthroscopies were associated with decreased natural anticoagulant factor levels.
