Researchers examined the use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), which are commonly used for various medical purposes such as long-term antibiotic treatment, chemotherapy, nutrition, and blood draws. The study concluded that, while PICC lines are easy to insert and cost-effective, they are associated with several complications, including phlebitis/thrombophlebitis, venous thrombosis, catheter-related infection, wound infection, and central vein stenosis.
