A study published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases defined instrument selection for the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society-Outcomes Measures in Rheumatology (ASAS-OMERACT) domain set for axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA).

The core outcome instruments were selected following the stepwise method of identifying instrument candidates using a literature review, reducing the number of instrument candidates, assessing the instruments’ psychometric properties, selecting core instruments, and getting endorsement by the ASAS.

The researchers selected 7 updated instruments for the domains that are mandatory for all axSpA trials: Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score and Numerical Rate Scale (NRS) patient global assessment of disease activity, NRS total back pain, average NRS of duration and severity of morning stiffness, NRS fatigue, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Function Index, and ASAS Health Index. Nine more instruments are thought to be required for disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs trials. In addition, 11 further instruments were also recognized by ASAS that can be used in AxSpA trials in addition to the core instruments.
