Through performing a systematic review, researchers looked to evaluate insomnia as a possible risk factor for myocardial infarction (MI). Through their analysis, researchers found a considerable connection between the incidence of MI and insomnia vs people without insomnia. The greatest link of incidence of MI when looking at duration of sleep was 5 or less hours of sleep vs 7 to 8 hours of sleep. An insignificant connection with MI was seen in a subgroup analysis of nonrestorative sleep and daytime dysfunction. Researchers noted that insomnia should be considered a risk factor for MI and included in guidelines for MI prevention.
