The Emotional Burden of Caregiving for Patients With Cirrhosis

Those who care for patients with cirrhosis of the liver face stress that affects their quality of life. Researchers explored the primary stressors to elucidate what makes the caregiver burden so difficult, for the purposes of designing helpful interventions. Caregivers of 25 patients with liver disease were interviewed regarding themes centered on emotions and resiliency. Other themes emerged, such as scant time for self‐care, hierarchical aspects of caregiver role, communicating with medical professionals, religion, and more.
