In a recent study, researchers evaluated and summarized the most reliable and up-to-date evidence on self-management practices for adult patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). A comprehensive literature search was conducted across guideline repositories, professional association websites, and medical databases to identify relevant sources published between January 2018 and September 2023. The review included a broad range of evidence types, such as clinical guidelines, expert consensus statements, clinical decision tools, systematic reviews, and randomized controlled trials, to ensure a robust and well-rounded synthesis.
In total, 19 high-quality sources were selected, comprising 9 guidelines, 4 expert consensus statements, 4 clinical decision tools, and 2 systematic reviews, from which 49 discrete pieces of evidence were extracted. These were organized into six key domains of self-management: skin care, dietary habits, physical activity, vaccination protocols, management of common complications, and long-term follow-up and lifestyle practices. The resulting evidence provides a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for clinicians and patients to support more structured, informed, and effective self-care. These recommendations can empower patients to take a more active role in managing their condition and may contribute to improved disease control and quality of life.
