Researchers provided an overview of the treatment of congestion in heart failure, a significant problem in developed countries that leads to numerous hospitalizations and high healthcare costs. The primary symptom and cause of hospitalization in heart failure patients is congestion, and diuretics, especially loop diuretics, are the mainstay of congestion treatment. Different types of diuretics have varying mechanisms of action, bioavailability, side effects, and effects on the cardiovascular and renal systems. This study provides a step-by-step approach to managing congestion in heart failure patients to aid medical practice, concluding that diuretics remain the primary treatment, with a focus on blocking nephrons. Researchers also noted that new therapies are emerging, and ongoing research is necessary to improve strategies for managing this condition.
