A recent joint session held by the European Society of Cardiology and JAMA Cardiology focused on disparities in heart failure outcomes between white patients and patients of color, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The session highlighted various aspects, including disparities unveiled by the pandemic, implicit bias and structural racism, heart failure in Africa, social determinants of health, diversity in clinical trials, and leadership and health equity.
Speakers emphasized the need for a better understanding of the historical factors contributing to these disparities, improved data collection and analysis, and strong leadership to address health equity in heart failure care to achieve meaningful change.
