A recent study assessed heart failure patients with moderately reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF), a less commonly studied category compared to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The study focused on a homogenous cohort of male veterans with ischemic coronary disease. The study found that long-term survival was lower in both HFmrEF and HFrEF groups, with similar risk-adjusted hazards of mortality. HFmrEF patients had a higher rate of myocardial infarction and a lower rate of heart failure-related hospitalization. Researchers highlight the need for further research to identify the unique characteristics and pathophysiological differences of HFmrEF and clarify its risk compared to HFpEF and HFrEF.
