Results of a recent study indicate that most TikTok content regarding gynecologic cancers might be misleading or inaccurate. This study aimed to identify unmet patient needs and the quality of information that patients with gynecologic cancer, including mothers and young women, receive on social media. Analyzing the top 500 posts under five hashtags related to various gynecologic cancers, researchers found that the information was predominantly poor in quality and unreliable, with over 73% of content being inaccurate. The researchers of the study also noted racial disparities in the information available on social media.
The findings suggest a need for medical professionals to engage in trustworthy communication and provide quality health information on social media to counter misinformation and address racial and cultural disparities in cancer treatment.
