Researchers presented five-year study findings. They compared two treatments for patients with heart failure and moderate-to-severe or severe secondary mitral regurgitation: transcatheter edge-to-edge repair of the mitral valve plus medical therapy, and medical therapy alone. The annualized hospitalization rate for heart failure was 33.1% in the device group compared to 57.2% in the control group. All-cause mortality over five years was 57.3% in the device group and 67.2% in the control group. Researchers concluded that for patients with heart failure and moderate-to-severe or severe secondary mitral regurgitation, transcatheter edge-to-edge repair combined with medical therapy was more effective in reducing hospitalization for heart failure and all-cause mortality over 5 years than medical therapy alone.
