A recent study reviewed the incidence and acute outcomes of catastrophic events during craniofacial surgery in children; more than 7,000 procedures performed between January 2002 and January 2019 were looked at, and factors such as venous air embolism, acute airway obstruction, major hemorrhage, acute intracranial hypertension, and more were considered. No deaths were noted.
