Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms may be formed from abnormalities of mast cell structure or function, and interventions that change mast cell activity, such as stabilizers, or function, such as histamine antagonists, only modestly help patients. The overall mast cell dysfunction may disrupt epithelial barrier function, which alters gut permeability, potentially leading to changed bowel function and then pain. Researchers assert that investigations should seek patients who could respond to therapies that address permeability defects and microbiome alterations.
