Researchers of a study, published in the Journal of Surgical Research, found that robot-assisted resection could be a safe and effective method in removing gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) that are difficult to reach. A total of 25 consecutive patients were enrolled in the study who had robot-assisted partial gastrectomy from 2019-2021. Tumor locations included gastroesophageal junction (n = 12), lesser curvature (n = 7), posterior gastric wall (n = 4), fundus (n = 3), greater curvature (n = 3), and antrum (n = 2). All of the patients had successful robotic-assisted resection in difficult-to-reach GISTs, with also achieving preservation of the gastroesophageal junction and pylorus.
