A recent single-center study found the Acne Core Outcomes Research Network Patient Global Assessment, or ACORN PtGA, is a reliable and valid patient-reported tool for assessing acne severity. The study included 154 adults receiving outpatient acne care between July 2022 and November 2023, with data collected across 238 visits. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires, including the ACORN PtGA, Skindex-16, Comprehensive Acne Quality of Life, DermSat-7, and Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale. Researchers found a strong correlation between ACORN PtGA and clinician-assessed Comprehensive Acne Severity Scale scores, along with moderate correlations to quality-of-life and symptom measures.

The findings suggest that ACORN PtGA may offer an efficient way to capture patient-reported acne disease activity, particularly when clinician assessment is unavailable. The tool also showed strong responsiveness over time, with sensitivity to changes in acne severity comparable to clinician-rated measures and stronger than several quality-of-life domains. However, the authors noted important limitations, including the single-center design and limited representation of Black and Hispanic participants. Additional studies are needed to confirm generalizability and evaluate other measurement properties. However, the results support ACORN PtGA as a promising option for acne assessment in clinical research and potentially clinical care.
