For the purposes of designing a classification scheme, researchers evaluated evidence that viral infections impact the musculoskeletal system. They used SYRCLE’s risk of bias tool for animal studies, searched the Reference Citation Analysis (RCA) as well as the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and concluded that viruses contribute to moderate-to-severe osteitis. A half-dozen human studies were eligible for inclusion in the qualitative synthesis, and hepatitis C was found to play a role in peri- and post-operative complications.
